Alan Reed
Battlefields Guide
Alan spent his first 17 years in France and his father worked for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Former teacher, Alan, has led NST tours since 1997, is a successful, published author, speaks fluent French and offers a huge knowledge of the battlefield region.
Alana Britton
Battlefields Guide
Alana taught History and English for 20 years in Australia and the UK. She is a senior examiner, subject reviewer and has guided students in the battlefields, Poland and Germany for a decade. She collects historical memorabilia and is a member of a re-enactment society.
Aysen Bekir
Central European Guide
Aysen graduated from London University with a BA (Hons) in History. She has taught GCSE and A-level History in London since 1980, and led yearly school trips to Berlin since 1996: her experience of the city goes back to Cold War times, visiting friends there since 1976. She speaks German, Turkish and French.
Charlotte Ross-Harris
Central European Guide
Charlotte studied at the University of Exeter and University of Heidelberg in Germany. She has taught German, Politics and History both inside the classroom and all over Europe.
Christopher Warrington
Central European Guide
University of Sheffield graduate, Chris was previously Head of German teaching German History at A Level. He is also a Principal Examiner in German for a major exam board. Chris has accompanied many groups to Berlin over the last 30 years and has a wide knowledge of the city.
David Hill
Battlefields Guide
Retired History teacher, David, has been teaching, researching, writing and publishing on the subject of WWI throughout his career. He has led Paris and WWI battlefield tours for over 30 years and is a Western Front Association member.
David Whithorn
Battlefields Guide
David has knowledge of the battlefields and the day-to-day lives of the soldiers of the Great War. A published author, he is well-known for researching individual soldiers and using the stories gained from talking with veterans of the trenches to provide a perspective that is practically unique.
Gareth Williams
Battlefields Guide
Gareth is a Head of Department, a retired Royal Naval Reserve Lieutenant and was a Finalist on BBC's Mastermind with the Battle of the Somme being a specialist subject. He offers 15+ years’ battlefield guiding experience, first-hand military insight, and expert local knowledge having lived near Arras.
Janet Searle
Central European Guide
Janet graduated from Bristol University with a BA Hons degree in German and French and completed her PGCE at Reading. She has taught languages for 25+ years in schools in the UK and Switzerland. She has also worked in Munich and Salzburg and has family in eastern Germany.
Jason King
Battlefields Guide
After a secondary education career and contribution to the Education Department of Nottingham University, Jason works as a freelance museum educator with access to artefacts and collections from which he draws to enhance his tours. He has led tours throughout NW Europe since 1979.
Jeff Garner
Central European Guide
Cambridge graduate, Jeff, is the senior guide/lecturer for NST’s Guided History Programme, responsible for guide training and involved in product development and overseeing tour arrangements. Jeff has extensive experience in museum work and secondary education.
John Cameron-Webb
Battlefields Guide
John is the British Consul in Amsterdam running a busy Consulate-General. However, WWI is his main focus of interest and has worked for NST since 2007, bridging the gap between then and now. Avid historian and former Military Policeman, John involves groups well in army life.
Keith Mallinson
Central European Guide
An Oxford graduate, Keith has taught History and Classics in a variety of schools and colleges on Tyneside and in Singapore. He is an examiner in both subjects and his special interest lies in the Nazi period and WWII.
Marie Quarman
Battlefields Guide
Marie is a retired History teacher with many years of experience in guiding school parties to the WWI battlefields. She has worked for NST since 2005 and has had a lifelong passion for this period of history. Marie is also an Assistant Examiner for Modern World History at GCSE.
Matthew Lucas
Battlefields Guide
Historical Information Officer and trustee of the Western Front Association, Matthew has worked as a battlefield tour guide for over 10 years. He heads up the oral history programme at Wolverhampton University where he lectures on the Normandy Campaign. His first book on the subject will be published in 2015.
Murray McVey
Battlefields Guide
Now retired, Murray enjoyed a long and successful teaching career and has been a sought-after guide for NST since 1999. He has a lifelong interest in the WWI battlefields, lecturing on the subject in the UK. Murray regularly leads both WWI and WWII focused tours in France and Belgium.
Neil Matthews
Battlefields Guide
Neil was Head of History at a Nottinghamshire comprehensive school, a consultant with his Local Authority and an Advanced Skills Teacher. He is now working as an Assistant Head Teacher and is a highly experienced and accomplished WWI and WWII guide having led numerous tours in France and Belgium.
Peter Crook
Battlefields Guide
Peter read History at Bristol, worked as Head of History, Senior Teacher and Associate Advisor for History, has edited and written WWI/WWII commentaries, runs an education consultancy, has organised History conferences, advised a teacher training organisation, and guided battelfield tours since 1982.
Peter Oxley
Central European Guide
Peter has lengthy experience of taking school groups to Germany, Russia and the WWI battlefields. His CV boasts Head of History, GCSE Examiner and work for the BBC. He has written an A Level Russian History textbook, but his main area of historical interest is 20th century Germany.
Philip Ginnings
Central European Guide
Phil has taught History and Politics since 1991 and has been a head of department since 1998. He has led visits to sites of the two World Wars and the Holocaust in Europe for over 15 years and is a Fellow in Holocaust Education of the Imperial War Museum.
Robert Watson
Battlefields Guide
History graduate, Robert, is a retired teacher with more than 30 years’ experience of teaching GCSE and A Level. Robert boasts an MSc in Historical Geography and an MPhil in Modern History. He offers extensive guiding experience and also leads walking and mountain tours for several well-known holiday companies.
Ross Raeburn
Central European Guide
Ross has considerable experience as the head of a successful religious education department and a practising GCSE and A Level teacher. He has worked with NST for a number of years, predominantly in Krakow and Berlin, where his enthusiasm for History and RS has been highly valued by school groups.
Simon Barber
Battlefields Guide
Simon has been organising and leading WWI battlefield tours for 20 years. He joined our team upon retiring from the classroom and retains close links with the teaching profession; he marked A-Level History papers for many years and currently manages external exams for his former school.
Dr Stephen Hartley
Central European Guide
Stephen has a PhD in Modern History from the Department of War Studies, King’s College, London. He has taught for over 20 years and has led numerous school tours. Stephen has travelled to over 80 countries and is a published Irish history author for MacMillan’s War Studies Series.
Steven Rawcliffe
Central European Guide
A retired teacher with over thirty years’ experience of secondary education including spells working in Germany and Asia, Steve has organised and led many GCSE and A Level tours to Europe. A fluent German speaker, he has a deep interest in and knowledge of the country’s history and politics.
Tom Morgan
Battlefields Guide
In 1999, Tom took early retirement from teaching. He is an experienced battlefields guide, runs a respected WWI website, has published battlefields-themed articles, made a Battle of the Somme TV documentary and regularly advises BBC programme makers on Great War matters.
Tony Sharp

An Oxford graduate and former Head of History, Tony has spent over 30 years teaching the subject. He has a lifetime interest in the WWI battlefields and comes to NST with many years’ experience of leading and guiding groups around the area.
