Our expert speakers are selected to meet the learning objectives of the Maths curriculum and students can put their own questions to our experts during a Q&A session. As part of this immersive maths event students take part in park challenges covering the fundamentals of maths in a practical and fun way.

Event overview

Expert speaker presentations - through real life experiences our speakers will give students the chance to hear how mathematics can be used to develop models of real situations and learn that they can be more or less effective depending on the assumptions that have been made.

Q&A session - interactive question and answer sessions will develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts. 

Team park challenges - enable students to select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems and interpret mathematical information to reach conclusions within a unique learning environment.

Kia Commodore

Kia is the visionary behind the acclaimed ‘Pennies to Pounds’ platform, a financial literacy hub created to empower people to shape their future with complete financial knowledge. She has made contributions to numerous podcasts including BBC Radio 5 Live’s ‘Your Work, Your Money’ and Legal & General’s ‘A Little Bit Richer’. Her impactful work, featured in publications such as The Guardian, Cosmopolitan and Huffpost has reshaped financial education.

Kia will demonstrate to your students how maths and finance relate to their everyday world.

Alex Bellos (3rd February only)

Alex Bellos is a strong communicator with an ability to make mathematics relevant and entertaining; he is the author of ‘Alex’s Adventures in Numberland’ – the most successful popular maths title of recent years. It was shortlisted for the BBC Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction and a Galaxy National Book Award, and has been translated into 20 different languages.

With his enthusiasm and engaging style, Alex will demonstrate how mathematical ideas underpin just about everything in our lives, broadening your students’ knowledge and understanding.

Dr Katie Steckles (3rd March only)

Katie is a dynamic force in the world of mathematics education. With a wealth of projects including livestreams of maths content as part of the Finite Group Patreon, writing for New Scientist magazine’s ‘Mathematics of life’ column and co-authoring the book ‘Maths 100 Ideas in 100 Words’ in partnership with The Science Museum.

An engaging and enthusiastic communicator, Katie will impart her knowledge on mathematical thinking and showcase the beauty of maths in everyday life.

Q&A Session

Our lively and interactive question and answer session gives the students control to ask the questions they want answers to. All the speakers take to the stage to answer questions to provide different perspectives and to offer invaluable career advice from their own experience.

Workbook and Park Challenges

Our complementary workbooks are designed to be used as your group enjoy the Disney® Parks. The workbooks contain park challenges which encourage students to take a step back and critically appraise the resort from their subject perspective. These park challenges provide opportunity for problem solving, decision making as well as working together so that your students get the maximum from the their time at Disneyland® Paris.

Jon Chase - Facilitator

Jon Chase is a science communicator, author and science rapper based in South Wales. He has an intense passion for scientific thinking and believes that knowledge should be made available in a way that allows as many people as possible the opportunity to gain access to it.

He has presented science for BBC learning on TV and YouTube and also co-authored books on The Science of Star Wars and The Science of Harry Potter. In 2017 he was awarded the Josh Award in Science Communication but is most well known for his science raps, which he has produced for various learning establishments and organisations including NASA, BBC, CH4 and Chester Zoo.

Jon will feature as Facilitator for Computing LIVE! on 3rd February only.

 

Dr Matt Pritchard

Matt is a maths and science magician. As a Curator of Wonder, his amazing performances both inspire and inform. Previously, Matt conducted atomic physics research at Durham University before working at Thinktank Science Museum. In addition to this experience, he has 22 years working as a professional magician and is an Associate of the Inner Magic Circle – one of only 300 people in the world to hold this distinction. 

Predicting the future, reading minds, sending secret messages and making objects vanish are easy when you’re a maths magician – let Matt show your students the maths behind the magic!

Study themes & levels

The event is aimed at Leaving Certificate & Key Stage 4 students of Maths and is designed to complement studies within the AQA, OCR, Edexcel syllabus as well as complimenting WJEC and SQA qualifications.

  • Understanding how the maths of rollercoasters has an effect on the human body including gravity and weightlessness.
  • Demonstrate how maths is used around the parks from shapes to patterns and symmetry.

  • Understanding how standard units of maths, length, time, money and other measures are used in everyday life.
